LEGO® bricks can be much more than toys. People with disabilities use them in many different ways: to communicate ideas, concentrate, settle the mind, practice coordination, solve problems, create art, and connect with other people.

Join Nerds Like Me at Central Brick Society to hear directly from people with disabilities about how they put this familiar tool to work. After the conversation, we’ll build together and explore how the same pile of bricks can support many different minds, needs, and ways of participating.

The Conversation

We’ll hear personal perspectives on how LEGO® bricks can become practical tools for creativity, focus, communication, and connection.

This is a conversation about lived experience, ingenuity, and what becomes possible when people can choose materials and methods that work for them.

What We’ll Explore

  • How building can make an idea tangible and easier to communicate
  • How hands-on creative work can support focus and unplugged time
  • How LEGO® bricks combine art, engineering, problem-solving, and hand-eye coordination
  • How a shared activity can create common ground without requiring everyone to participate in the same way

Then We’ll Build Together

The second half of the evening will be hands-on. You can work independently, collaborate with someone else, experiment without a plan, or follow an idea wherever it leads. No competition, no single correct result, and no prior LEGO® building experience required.

The Venue

Central Brick Society at 461 Central Avenue in downtown Highland Park is our setting for an evening centered on creativity, accessibility, and community.

Central Brick Society will sponsor light snacks for the evening. Feel free to bring dinner if you’d like something more substantial. The venue is BYOB.

Who Should Come

Adults interested in disability, accessibility, creativity, design, engineering, focus, or simply the satisfying click of two bricks coming together. People with and without disabilities are welcome, as are experienced LEGO® fans and complete first-timers.
