June 4th Nerds Like Me Event Series: Getting Nerdy for Comedy

Nerds Like Me: Getting Nerdy For Comedy

June will be a double-feature month (two meet-ups, one month) with a discussion on AI in Education with Lisa Berghoff and….

A one-time event. Not your usual meetup format.

Comedy and technology have more in common than you think. Both are about pattern recognition, timing, reading the room, and knowing which assumptions to exploit. For this special Nerds Like Me event, we’re flipping the script: a stand-up set followed by a deep-dive conversation about the craft itself.

Our Guests

Jack McWilliams (@jackmactv
Jack started doing comedy at Indiana University in 2015 with improv, sketch, and stand-up. Since moving to Chicago, he’s performed at Zanies, Laugh Factory, the Den Theatre, and the Comedy Bar. He now splits time between Chicago and Austin, running his own shows and sharpening his material on stages across both cities.

Dan Cass (@dankkass)
Dan Cass is a Chicago-based comedian, writer, and producer whose comedy blends surreal observations, social anxiety, and a genuine love of connecting with audiences. Originally from Northern California, he studied theater at the University of Idaho and the Moscow Art Theatre before making Chicago his comedy home. Dan has performed at Zanies, Laugh Factory, and clubs across the country, while also producing and hosting shows throughout the Chicago comedy scene.

What to Expect

Dan and Jack each perform a 30min live stand-up set. Then we shift gears: an unscripted conversation about how comedy actually works. How bits are built, how sets are structured, what separates a good joke from a great one, and why bombing is the most valuable data a comedian can collect. Think of it as a behind-the-scenes breakdown for people who like understanding systems.

“The Nerd”

(Logo) The image displays a logo featuring the text 'Nerds Like Me' in white, 3D-effect lettering, accompanied by a stylized graphic on the left resembling circuit board traces or a brain pattern. The overall design is set against a solid black background. Text: Nerds Like Me Colors: #FFFFFF, #C0C0C0, #000000 Note: This image is classified as a logo because it combines a distinct textual phrase with a unique graphic element, designed to represent a brand or identity. Its primary purpose appears to be brand recognition.
